Nigerian Canadian Multicultural Centre (NCMC), for the first time, joined countless museums worldwide to celebrate International Museum Day in Toronto on May 18th, 2024 at Etobicoke Civic Centre. The International Museum Day on May 18th, 2024 with the theme, “Museums, Education, and Research,” emphasizes the pivotal role of cultural institutions in providing a holistic educational experience. It pushes for a more conscious, sustainable, and inclusive world.
Our program in Toronto features some colorful activities with cultural presentations, African artifacts, paintings, a group of artisans, and more! Some of our programs include the unveiling of a popular piece of Benin bronze, Idia Mask, an artifacts exhibition, poetry, storytelling dancing, keynote speakers, the history of the advent of museums in Western countries and Africa, and other activities. The event was a re-enactment of African ancient civilization and an unraveling of the impact of colonial power on African cultural artifacts during the colonial era.
We had the presentation of some professional artists and cultural exponents in Toronto such as Funmi Adeshina, who exhibited her colorful paintings that depict the emotional expression of humans. Dr. Osholene Oshobugie Upiomoh presented the history of African cultural artifacts in Western museums from the Benin Kingdom, Danielle Cantave exhibited paintings and artworks from Haitian culture and a brief history of Haiti in the Western hemisphere amongst others. Some of our special guests were Chief Funmi Olumade (The Iyameto of Canada), Professor Noel Semple, Mr. Akeem Ogunmilade, and many others!
